If you wanted more of Michelle Yeoh after Everything Everywhere All At Once, you will find Netflix’s new action comedy series The Brothers Sun quite entertaining. Created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, The Brothers Sun revolves around one of the most powerful Taiwanese Triad families, when there is an assassination attempt on the head of the family the eldest son travels to America to protect his mother and his younger brother, who doesn’t know anything about the family business. The Brothers Sun also stars Justin Chen and Sam Li in the lead roles with Highdee Kuan, Alice Hewkin, and Madison Hu starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the action comedy series here are similar shows you might want to check out next.
Bloodhounds (Netflix)
Bloodhounds and The Brother Sun have very different stories and character types but because of the similarities in their genres and the banger action sequences, this Korean series deserves to be on this list. Based on a webtoon of the same name by Jeong Chan, the Netflix series revolves around two young boxers who fight together against ruthless loan sharks who prey on financially desperate people. Bloodhounds stars Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi in the lead roles with Kim Sae-ron, Park Sung-woong, Choi Si-won, and Ryu Soo-young starring in supporting roles.
Gangs of London (AMC+ & Prime Video Add-On)
Gangs of London is an intense crime thriller series with lots of brutality for the fans of the genre. Based on a video game of the same name, the British series created by Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery takes us into a crime-filled London where the recent assassination of the head of London’s most powerful crime family results in warring gangs and blood-soaked streets. Gangs of London stars Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu in the lead roles with Michelle Fairley, Lucian Msamati, Brian Vernel, and Nargis Rashidi starring in supporting roles. While Gangs of London is not big on comedy like The Brothers Sun it does have some similar elements if we look at the world of crime.
Animal Kingdom (Prime Video)
Animal Kingdom is a crime drama series with lots of messed up familial bonds which you will find a bit similar to The Brothers Sun. Based on a 2010 film of the same name which was inspired by a real-life crime family, the Australian series revolves around a 17-year-old boy who moves to live with his grandmother after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. He was shielded from his grandmother and other family members by his mother and he soon finds out why as all of them make their money by armed robbery. Animal Kingdom ran for six successful seasons ending its run in 2022.
Warrior (Max & Prime Video Add-On)
Warrior is very different from The Brothers Sun in both its story and its execution but we still didn’t want to leave it off the list as you will find lots of brilliantly choreographed action sequences in this series. Based on the texts from legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, Warrior is set in the 19th century and it revolves around a Chinese immigrant who arrives in San Fransisco under mysterious circumstances. Soon he proves his fighting skills to Chinatown’s most powerful crime family and is hired as an assassin. Warrior stars Andrew Koji in the lead role with Dianne Doan, Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, and Joanna Vanderham in supporting roles.
Vincenzo (Netflix)
In Vincenzo, the fans of The Brothers Sun will find crime, familial bonds, comedy, and most importantly action, which all of us loved in the new Netflix series. Vincenzo revolves around the titular character who works as a consigliere for an Italian crime family but when the head of the family dies he is hunted by his son. He leaves Italy for Korea where he has hidden an enormous amount of gold but the only problem is that to get to the gold he has to protect the building from an evil corporation. Vincenzo stars Song Joong-ki and Jeon Yeo-been in the lead roles with Ok Taec-yeon, Kwak Dong-yeon, Na Chul, Kim Hyun-yi, and Kim Sung-cheol in supporting roles.
Fubar (Netflix)
Fubar is an action comedy series that might not be very similar to The Brothers Sun in its execution but you will find many similar themes such as familial bonds and lots of action. The Netflix series stars the legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role and it revolves around a recently retired CIA operative who is called back to duty to help an undercover agent who he soon finds out is his daughter. Fubar also stars Monica Barbaro, Aparna Brielle, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Fortune Feimster, Gabriel Luna, and Jay Baruchel.
Guns & Gulaabs (Netflix)
From the legendary duo of Raj & DK comes a Hindi language crime-comedy series in which you will many crime families trying to one-up each other. While The Brothers Sun and Guns & Gulaabs do have different action and comedic styles you will find some similar character types. The Netflix crime series is set in the fictional town of Gulaabganj where farmers grow opium for the government but the crime family ruling the town pressures the farmers to grow more than the government demands to meet their illegal business needs. Guns & Gulaabs is an ensemble series which is why there are many different characters with different motivations which you will find very entertaining.
