‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Director Hasn’t Finalized the Ending Yet

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is currently in production, but the director Christopher McQuarrie reveals that he still hasn’t locked down the ending. As of now, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is playing in movie theaters, and as it was marketed, Dead Reckoning Part One is only the first part of a two-part story, but the director Christopher McQuarrie recently revealed in an interview with Collider, that he is still a bit unclear on how to end Part Two.

While talking about Dead Reckoning Part One, McQuarrie addresses the “impossible” task of figuring out an entertaining way to include the threat of an advanced AI in a film. He also talked about how this could be “a problem for Part Two,” as he is still figuring out how to end Dead Reckoning Part Two with Tom Cruise. While talking with Collider, McQuarrie said this when asked if Dead Reckoning Part Two will be the last film in the Tom Cruise action franchise, “I don’t know what the ending of Part Two is, so I couldn’t tell you.” He added, “I’m not being evasive. I could tell you that I know what the end of Part Two is, but I can’t guarantee that that will be the ending when we get there.”

That type of collaboration is the movie-making process for McQuarrie and Cruise, and then the director goes on to explain how he doesn’t like to “obsess about executing the plan,” they just have to have a general idea about where the story is heading. McQuarrie also explains that he and Cruise are not just “flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go along.” He also added “You are flying in a direction, you’re prepared. You couldn’t be that cavalier without somebody getting seriously physically hurt. These things are planned within an inch of their life. Along the way, we see a shiny object and go for it.”

The production of Dead Reckoning Part Two was recently shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which could go on indefinitely as no promising talks are happening between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP. This could result in a delay in the release of the upcoming Mission: Impossible film.
