HBO Max’s upcoming DC villain series titled Peacemaker picks up right where The Suicide Squad left off and while the film was an ensemble, the HBO Max series will have only one front and the center protagonist and that will be Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker (John Cena). The character of Peacemaker was introduced in James Gunn‘s Suicide Squad and no doubt he was one of the funniest and most brutal characters in the film. For the upcoming Peacemaker series, the writer/director Gunn teased the soundtrack for the project during a Television Critics Association summer press tour panel on Wednesday and said this about creating the series, that he was “most excited to create since Guardians of the Galaxy.“
The theme for the teased soundtrack is a very specific sort of 1980s jams, there were no specifications by Gunn on which band will play the music but he made it clear that “it really is all hair metal… A lot of 80s hair metal, but it’s also a lot of modern sleaze rock and hair metal that comes out of Europe — a lot of really great bands that people don’t know about.“
Gunn also stated that the music template for the show did need some curation, by saying that “I love that stuff but there’s also a lot of really bad hair metal. So it was fun finding the really good stuff to inject the series with flavor, which we keep throughout the whole first season.“
This is good news for the fans of Whitesnake and Mötley Crüe, but this is also good news for the fans of John Cena because in the first episode Peacemaker will be having a little dance party in his tightie-whities.
The scene with Cena dancing in his underpants was mentioned by Gunn, as one of the first scenes they shot at the beginning of the production on the series and it was followed by Cena’s observation that “as far as my dancing goes, I’ve learned two things about James Gunn through our relationship: One, he’s obsessed with my tighty-whities. And two, he always wants to make me dance, so you can watch this on HBO Max, and there will more than likely be tighty-whities and dancing in store.“
There is not much known about the series at this point but this description was given by HBO Max:
Peacemaker will explore the origins of the character that John Cena first portrayed in James Gunn’s 2021 film, The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
Peacemaker also stars Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Chukwudi Iwuji. Peacemaker will premiere on HBO Max in January 2021.
