While originally The Housemaid was set to release on this Christmas Day against Timothée Chalamet’s sports comedy-drama film Marty Supreme, the release date for the film was pulled up a bit to December 19, 2025, and it is now opening against the next entry into James Cameron‘s billion-dollar franchise, Avatar.

The Housemaid stars Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You) as the housemaid Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body) as Nina Winchester, Brandon Sklenar (1923) as Andrew Winchester, Michele Morrone (365 Days) as Enzo, Elizabeth Perkins (Another Simple Favor) as Evelyn Winchester, Mark Grossman as Scott Crawford, Hannah Cruz as Lexi, and Indiana Elle as Cecelia Winchester.
The Housemaid’s Production Details
Todd Lieberman’s production company, Hidden Pictures, acquired the rights to McFadden’s 2022 novel in the same year it was released. Then, Hidden Pictures and Lionsgate partnered up to produce the film with Feig at the helm.
Principal photography for The Housemaid began in January this year in New Jersey, with the filming wrapping up in March 2025. The Housemaid is being produced on a moderate budget of between $25-$40 million, and with all the hype associated with the film, it seems like it will be able to make that back.
What Does the Author of the Book Think About the Adaptation?
McFadden gave a huge thumbs up to Feig’s upcoming adaptation, saying that she “absolutely loved it!” and she also added that she thinks “it was better than the book!‘” McFadden also praised the performances by everyone in the cast and gave a tease that, after watching the film, she is thinking about writing a sequel to the book.
