Sony recently revealed an official synopsis for Zach Cregger‘s much-anticipated new Resident Evil film as well as brand new footage, but that will not be released to the public. Alongside directing the film, Cregger also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4).
Based on the iconic video game franchise, the upcoming Cregger film is not going to be a straightforward adaptation as it will be a new story set in the world of Resident Evil. As Cregger explained: “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”
During Song Picture’s presentation at ComicCon 2026, they revealed brand new footage for the film, and while that will not be revealed to the audience, the studio did confirm the official synopsis for the upcoming film.
The official synopsis is, “Austin Abrams (Weapons) plays Bryan, a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in a nonstop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.“
During the presentation, Cregger described his film as a “big, scary ride,” and it seems like the attendees agree, as many described the footage as nightmare fuel. Cregger also said the audience will be “locked in with a protagonist on a foot journey through a world hell-bent on destroying them.”
Resident Evil is set to release in theaters on September 18, 2026. A trailer for the film is also expected to be released soon.
