We’re just a few hours in to the fifteen-hour-long shift that is the much-anticipated second season of HBO Max’s The Pitt, and the medical drama series is already setting viewership records. Created by R. Scott Gemmill, the HBO Max series has already been renewed for a third season, and it also just got an exciting update from HBO boss Casey Bloys.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Bloys discussed the success of The Pitt Season 3 and when asked if fans can expect the next season of The Pitt in January 2027, Bloys said that while he “doesn’t know an exact date,” but they are planning to release a new season every year by saying that, “Yes, the idea is to keep it on on an annual basis. One of the big goals in putting a show like this on the air was to be able to bring it back annually. That is an important part of this equation.”
Season 2 of The Pitt is set around the Fourth of July, and it follows Dr. Robby as he arrives for his last day at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center before going on a sabbatical. Dr. Robby’s replacement is Dr. Al-Hashimi, who’s much more data-driven and wants to integrate AI into the emergency room to save time and money.
How ‘The Pitt’ Changed HBO’s Way of Making Shows?
If you didn’t know, The Pitt’s astronomical success prompted HBO to change the way it produces television shows. As you already know, in the streaming era, most shows take at least two to three years to return with a new season, and the long wait makes the fans lose interest.
With The Pitt, Bloys said that HBO wanted “more than six or eight weeks of episodes, 15 weeks of weekly engagement, but also, and probably most importantly in this environment, setting up a show that is creatively capable of coming back within a year,” and it’s safe to say that it delivered.
Before streaming shows became the norm, television shows were produced like The Pitt, with even higher episode counts and lower budgets. Bloys commented on this when asked by Deadline about the lessons HBO learned from the success of The Pitt, saying, “I don’t know if it’s a lesson so much as it’s the history of television, there is a reason why shows were designed this way.”
The Pitt Season 2 is currently airing on HBO Max, with Season 3 set to release next year.
