The anticipation for a new Saw film has never been higher, as a major behind-the-scenes shift has brought the upcoming film back into the hands of its creator, James Wan.
Until last year, the Saw films were produced by Twisted Pictures, but six months ago, Twisted Pictures’ stake in the franchise was bought by Blumhouse Productions, which has put the franchise’s future in the hands of the two people who started it all, Wan and Leigh Whannell.
At the Sundance Film Festival, Wan spoke at a screening about the upcoming Saw 11 film and said that “All I can say at this point is… we’re gonna do one. We are going to make one. I don’t want to say too much. It’s very early still. Needless to say, the franchise has actually come back to Leigh and me. So we’re very excited… yeah, that means a lot.“
He also added, “We want to hark back to the spirit of the original film. We want to be mindful and be respectful of what fans have learned about the soapy nature of the entire franchise. We know there’s a lot of love for the world, but we definitely want to go back to the spirit of the first film. We want to make another scary Saw movie. That’s the goal.”
While Wan will be “more hands-on with the franchise” going forward, that doesn’t mean he will be directing the upcoming film, which was cleared up by Dread Central’s Brad Miska.
Wan also spoke with Bloody Disgusting about the upcoming film and said this about Jigsaw’s importance in the Saw films, “This is what I’ll say. Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.“
