This might be one of the most interesting new pieces of news for cinephiles everywhere, as according to The Insneider, Best Picture winner One Battle After Another‘s filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson has rewritten the screenplay for Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming film, What Happens at Night.
The original screenplay for What Happens at Night was written by Tony-winning playwright Patrick Marber, who’s known for writing films like Closer and Notes on a Scandal.
While it is unclear how much of the screenplay Anderson rewrote or if he will get the credit for it or not, it is not the first time this has happened. According to reports, Anderson was just helping out Scorsese and the star of his latest Best Picture film, Leonardo DiCaprio. Similar reports came out about Anderson contributing to the scripts of Ridley Scott‘s Napoleon and Scorsese’s last film, Killers of the Flower Moon.

When The Wrap asked Anderson about the reports, he said, “I love to contribute in any way I can if somebody reaches out for help. Both of those things were a thing with Joaquin (Phoenix), a thing with Leo (DiCaprio), and obviously with Marty and Ridley. It’s always a privilege to say, ‘Let me tell you my thoughts on the script.’They made me feel encouraged and confident.“
Based on Peter Cameron‘s 2020 novel of the same name, the Gothic psychological horror film is set in a small snowy European town, and it follows an American couple as they arrive in town to adopt a baby, but things take a turn for the worse when they begin to face difficulties with claiming their baby.
What Happens at Night stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as a married American couple. It also stars Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Welker White, and Patrick Plajzer.
What Happens at Night is currently under production in Prague for Apple Original Films, and it is likely to come out in late 2027 or early 2028.
