A few days before the DC Studios’ latest TV series, Lanterns, even premiered, the co-showrunner of the series confirmed that a writers’ room is being assembled to work on a follow-up. While most of these big-budget superhero TV outings are made to be one-and-done, it seems like HBO is considering making a second season for Lanterns, depending on whether it pulls in the viewership.
HBO has a history of making great television, and combined with the popularity of Green Lanterns, the latest series in James Gunn‘s DC Universe has all it needs to be a success. So, it seems like HBO isn’t waiting around to see if the series hits or not.
According to co-creator Damon Lindelöf, the first season of Lanterns is designed to be a self-contained mystery, saying that “we came into this with the sort of attitude that this was a mystery with a beginning, middle, and end. We had a story to tell about characters that we really cared about, and we would want the audience to kind of get to know them over the course of the first season and really invest in them, and then that story ended.“
Lindelöf also confirmed to Screen Rant that showrunner Chris Mundy is currently in the process of assembling a writers’ room to bounce around ideas on where the story could go in a potential second season. Lindelöf also added that if Lanterns is “successful and people love it, there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons.”
Lindelöf is not expected to return for a potential second season, while Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell has been brought in to serve as the co-showrunner alongside Mundy.
While all of this seems to be good news for fans who are loving Lanterns, I also want to stress that a second season of Lanterns is entirely dependent on how popular the first season proves to be, and keep in mind that HBO still hasn’t officially greenlit Lanterns for a second season.
