A ‘Labubu’ Movie is in Development at Sony

Published on

The studio that just brought you the global phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters is now working to develop a film based on the scruffy monster dolls known as Labubu. According to THR, Sony Pictures has closed a deal that gives it the screen rights to the Chinese doll brand.

As the studio just closed the deal, no producer or creatives have been announced yet, and it is also too soon to determine if Sony Pictures is looking to make the film animated or live-action.

What is Labubu?

Labubu is a plush toy line of cute-ugly monsters created by artist Kasing Lung in Hong Kong. Chinese retail giant Pop Mart bought the toy line from How2Work in 2019 and began selling them via “blind boxes.”

Soon, Labubu dolls were everywhere, and people loved them, but their popularity was limited in Southeast Asia. However, after Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink was seen wearing a Labubu doll as an accessory, they gained popularity worldwide as well.

Stay tuned for any future news on the Labubu dolls film.
