Bella Thorne revealed that she has been tapped to write, direct, and star in Spring Breakers 2. The sequel is coming more than a decade after the original 2012 film, which became a cult hit and helped establish A24 as a major force in the independent film industry.
During an appearance on Alex Cooper‘s Call Her Daddy podcast, Thorne revealed that she recently wrapped up production on her feature directorial debut, Color Your Hurt, and after watching an early cut of it, producers asked her to write “something to see if they would like it.”
Thorne added that the producers “loved” her script for the sequel, adding, “and now I’m writing and directing Spring Breakers 2.“
Spring Breakers 2 also known as Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain revolves around a group of rebellious girls on a wild road trip that descends into chaos and mayhem. The story follows the girls trying to survive the situation they created.
In 2025, the film was announced with Matthew Bright attached as director, but Thorne has now taken over directing duties. Thorne was added to the cast of the sequel film alongside Grace Van Dien, True Whitaker, and Ariel Martin.
The Original ‘Spring Breakers’ and Its Significance
Spring Breakers revolves around four college students as they head to Florida for their spring break and to get money for it, they rob a restaurant which gets them arrested and later they are bailed out by a drug dealer who convinces them to join him.
The cast of the original film includes Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, Gucci Mane, and James Franco.
When Thorne was asked about any returning cast members, she avoided commenting on it. However, she did confirm that the original production team behind the 2012 film “is back. So, we’re really excited about that.“
The original Spring Breakers helped put A24 on the map with its mature story and themes and past Disney stars with family-friendly images. It made around $31.7 million at the worldwide box office on a $5 million production budget.
