Every James Gunn’s DC Project Coming in 2024

Published on

After announcing his plans for the DC Studios as Co-CEO, James Gunn has been incredibly busy exacting his vision of DC’s marvellous world from the comics. While some fans are still on the fence about some of the decisions made by Gunn and David Zaslav (Warner Bros. Discovery CEO), most of the audience is eager to watch the new DCEU with Gunn as its Kevin Feige. 2024 will be the beginning of Gunn’s DCEU as the first project from his upcoming DC universe will come out this year, but while it is a beginning of sorts, the real kick-off point will be the Superman: Legacy film coming out next year, which Gunn wrote and directed himself. In this article we are talking about every DC project coming out in 2024 under Gunn as the Co-CEO of DC Studios.

The Penguin (September 2024)

The Penguin is an upcoming Matt Reeves’s The Batman eight-part limited spin-off series focusing on the title character played by Colin Farrell. While The Penguin doesn’t exactly fit in the James Gunn plan for the DCEU, it has been labelled as DC Elseworlds. Created by Lauren LeFranc, the upcoming Max series is based on a DC supervillain character of the same name created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

The Max series will follow the story of Oz Cobb, aka Penguin, after the events of The Batman, as he rises from being a disfigured Carmine Falcone lackey to becoming one of the biggest mob bosses in the city of Gotham. But before that, he will have to cross many hurdles, most notably Carmine Falcone’s daughter Sofia Falcone, who plays her every card to take over her father’s place.

The Penguin stars Farrell in the lead role of the Penguin with Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Theo Rossi as Dr Julian Rush, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, James Madio as Miles Grapa, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni starring in supporting roles.

Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4, 2024)

Joker: Folie à Deux is the much-anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips‘s brilliant take on DC’s iconic villain. Directed by Phillips from a screenplay co-written by Scott Silver and Phillips, the DC supervillain will exist in DC Elseworlds, and it is described as a musical romantic psychological thriller, which sounds very different from the first film, which felt like a Martin Scorsese psychological thriller. Joker went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with its $1.079 billion box office earnings on only a $55 million production budget, so the expectations for this upcoming sequel are very high, to say the least, which is made on a reported production budget of $200 million.

The upcoming sequel will continue the story of Arthur Fleck after the events of the 2019 film, who is in the Arkham State Hospital. Where he meets fellow patient Harleen Quinzel and soon the two feel deep love for each other. Spreading their wings in their shared delusions, the film will follow the progression of Arthur and Harleen’s relationship. While all that is happening, a bunch of Arthur’s followers start a movement to break him out of his incarceration.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the lead roles of Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker, and Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, with Zazie Beetz as Sophie, Leigh Gill as Gary, Sharon Washington as Arthur’s social worker, Catherine Keener, Harry Lawtey, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, and Ken Leung.

Creature Commandos (December 2024)

Creature Commandos is the first James Gunn DCU project coming out and it will be an adult animated series created by Gunn himself. Based on the characters from DC Comics, the upcoming Max series is supposed to be an action superhero series in line with DC films like The Suicide Squad.

The animated series will be set after the events of Peacemaker Season 1, in which Amanda Waller was exposed for exploiting prisoners to do her bidding. When Waller no longer controls the Belle Reve penitentiary inmates, she puts together a black ops team consisting of literal monsters to carry out a dangerous mission.

Creature Commandos’ voice cast includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Birde, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
