If anyone is still wondering about the status of the ‘BioShock‘ film adaptation after all these years, we have some news for you. During an interview with Collider, film producer Roy Lee said fans can expect the film to start filming next year.
According to Lee, the BioShock film would have been already if not for the busy schedule of its director, Francis Lawrence, who has been quite busy for some time now as his most recent film was the film adaptation of Stephen King‘s 1979 novel The Long Walk, and he is currently working on the post-production of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Lee confirmed for fans that “the intent is to hopefully get in production next year.” If all goes according to plan and the BioShock film begins production in early 2027, then a 2028 release date is not out of the question.
Lee also added that “we would have gotten it made a few years back, but then other movies got in the way, with one being The Long Walk and the other being The Hunger Games prequel, which comes out this December. We’re just waiting for him [Lawrence] to finish post-production, because he’s going to be working on it through at least September, and then jump back into it.“
While no official story has been confirmed for the BioShock film, it is expected to draw on the video game’s themes, setting, and story. The video game is set in 1960 and follows Jack, the lone survivor of a plane crash, who discovers a failed underwater utopian city called Rapture. Jack soon finds himself fighting the horrifying residents of Rapture, known as the Splicers.
The BioShock movie is being written by Logan and Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green. While no official cast announcement has been made yet, it was previously reported that Eddie Redmayne and Jamie Dornan auditioned to star in the film.
