‘House of the Dragon‘ is ending with its previously announced Season 4, and while we already know that showrunner Ryan Condal made the announcement last year, anyone hoping that HBO would keep it going. We have some bad news for you, as HBO’s Chairman, Casey Bloys, recently confirmed the news during an interview with Deadline.
When Deadline questioned Bloys about the Game of Thrones prequel series ending with Season 4. He said “Yes, that is the idea, the idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens.“
While Condal had said that House of the Dragon would end with its fourth season back in August last year, when HBO announced the renewal of Season 4 in November 2025, they had made no announcement about the series ending, so fans were still hoping for a miraculous Season 5 renewal.
Currently, Condal is focusing on post-production for Season 3 and working with the writers on the scripts for Season 4. Season 3 is set to come out in Summer 2026, while Season 4 is slated for a 2028 release.
Upcoming Game of Thrones Spin-off Shows

At least five or six Game of Thrones spin-off shows are under development. House of the Dragon was the first GOT spin-off series, with the recently released A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms being the second.
HBO had also commissioned a prequel series developed by screenwriter Jane Goldman back in 2018. The series is set roughly 10,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and its possible title was The Long Night. It is currently in limbo as HBO has decided not to move forward with the series.
For now, HBO is working on developing a prequel series titled Aegon’s Conquest. It will revolve around Aegon Targaryen as he invades Westeros and unifies it with the help of his sister-wive,s Rhaenys and Visenya
