Bad movies are everywhere, especially in this new age of Hollywood, where either every film is just about someone’s identity or just a dumb popcorn flick that can only be enjoyed by children (I’m looking at you, A Minecraft Movie). It seems to me that the writers in Hollywood have forgotten to write memorable or even coherent characters. Don’t get me wrong, movies like Dune and Oppenheimer do exist, but for every Oppenheimer, there are at least two Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In this article, we are going to focus on some extremely bad movies that were enjoyed or rightfully hated by millions of people in the theatres, and I say that because all of the films mentioned below have earned over a billion dollars.
Jurassic World Trilogy ($3.98 Billion in Total)
If you didn’t know dinosaurs are extinct but it was fun to see them come to life in the first two Jurassic Park films directed by Steven Spielberg but since then the Jurassic Park and now Jurassic World movies have been an even more dreadful time at the cinemas then whatever dreaded scenario the characters of the film find themselves in.
The Jurassic World trilogy serves as a reboot to the Spielberg films and it tries to connect itself as much as it can to them but the truth of the matter they are nowhere as good or even fun to watch as the original two films mostly because of the extremely bad scripts and its two wooden leads in Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. A new Jurassic World film starring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali has already come out, and in some aspects, it is even worse than the Jurassic World films.
Minions ($1.15 Billion)
If you don’t apply any logic, then Minions is a dumb and extremely entertaining film, but if you are not a five-year-old or a legend-tier meme lover, then the 2015 spin-off film of the Despicable Me franchise, simply titled Minions, probably didn’t work for you.
With no story, lazy jokes, and uneven pacing, Minions clocks in at a mercifully short 93 minutes, but even that short of a runtime feels like forever if you don’t buy into the whole craze of the yellow tic tacs.
The Fate of the Furious (1.23 Billion)
I know when it comes to the Fast & Furious franchise reviews and logic rarely matter but in my opinion the franchise should have ended with the perfect goodbye between Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto and the late Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner in Furious 7, as since then every film in the franchise has somehow found ways to get even more dumber and less entertaining.
With the final Fast & Furious film on its way, we can just hope that it somehow captures the magic of the original films, and it focuses more on street racing than it focuses on topping what idiotic thing they did in the last film. Just to make myself clear, I love the Fast & Furious franchise like my own family, but somewhere along the way, Dom’s family is giving me massive trauma and an untreatable migraine.
Captain Marvel ($1.13 Billion)
Captain Marvel is now seen as the original sin of Marvel Studios as what seems to have happened is that the heads at Marvel thought that the success of Captain Marvel was because people loved the film, but in reality it just had the perfect release window as it came out between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
To make my claim even clearer, the sequel to Captain Marvel, titled The Marvels, came out in 2023, and it only brought in a measly $206.1 million on a budget of over $300 million. Since then, Brie Larson has distanced herself from the MCU, and it is also being speculated that her character of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, might not return in future MCU projects.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi & The Rise of Skywalker ($1.33 Billion & $1.07 Billion)
These might be the most polarizing films in the list, but if you are truthful with yourself, then you probably realize that The Last Jedi & The Rise of Skywalker are probably two of the worst projects in the Star Wars universe, alongside the Han Solo film and The Acolyte series.
I have many criticisms for these two films, but the two biggest ones have to be that these films desecrate the memorable protagonists and the antagonist of the original trilogy. Also, Ray Skywalker and her band of misfits are nowhere near as charming as the original trio of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia.
