The Devil Wears Prada is finally returning for its much-anticipated sequel, but its star, Anne Hathaway, is already looking forward to the return of one of her other iconic films, The Princess Diaries.
Hathaway confirmed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she and her team are “constantly working” on the threequel film, but before that could materialize, The Devil Wears Prada 2 “cropped up and took over the space,” making it “impossible to focus on both at the same time.”
The Oscar-winning actress also added that now that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is done, “the intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” but she also made it clear that The Princess Diaries 3 has not been “greenlit or confirmed yet,” but she and her team are “chipping away at the script.”
While Hathaway is excited to make the threequel, it doesn’t mean that she will compromise on anything, as she said that “If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”

Based on Meg Cabot‘s 2000 young adult novel of the same name, the 2001 film starred Hathaway in the lead role of Mia Thermopolis as she discovers that she is the heir to the throne of a European kingdom of Genovia. Now Mia must decide if she wants to become the next Queen of Genovia with the help of her estranged grandmother and reigning queen, Clarisse Renaldi.
The first film did wonders at the box office as it made over $165 million on a budget of $26 million. So, a sequel was all but confirmed, and it came out with the title of The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement, and it made even more money at the box office, earning $135.3 million on a budget of $45 million.
Aside from Hathaway, The Princess Diaries film also starred Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, Robert Schwartzman, and Chris Pine.
Deadline reported all the way back in 2024 that Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians) will be taking on the responsibilities of the director for The Princess Diaries 3.
