C.J. Obasi‘s upcoming psychological drama A Blue Butterfly has wrapped up filming in London and is now moving to Rwanda for an additional two weeks of filming. A first look image from the film was revealed by Boudica Entertainment.
Deadline also reported that Lucian Msamati (Gangs of London), Anton Lesser (Andor), Eliane Umuhire (A Quiet Place: Day One), Andy Nyman (Death at a Funeral), and Aggy K. Adams (The Couple Next Door) have joined the previously announced cast of Steve Toussaint (House of the Dragon) and Sanaa Lathan (Out of Time).
The screenplay of the upcoming film is written by Toussaint, and it follows Sentwali, a man haunted by his past, living an isolated life, driving a limo through the city. The only person who truly knows and understands him is a frail holocaust survivor, but things change when Sentwali meets a charismatic actress who inspires him to face his past.
The upcoming film will be Obasi’s first film since the 2023 film Mami Wata, which was Nigeria’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and also landed nominations at the Sundance Film Festival and the 2024 Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best International Film.
Obasi said this in a statement about A Blue Butterfly’s screenplay: “I read a lot of good scripts, but Steve’s script is empathic and intuitive, with its sly humour. As a child of parents who survived a genocide, I connected with it on a deeply personal level, and was excited with the prospect of how we would make a truly human and cinematic character piece. All of the cast members are thespians operating at the height of their powers, and I’m in awe of their tremendous talent.”
A Blue Butterfly is a Boudica Entertainment production.
