Director Danny Boyle recently confirmed that plans for the third entry into the 28 Years Later franchise have stalled. During a Q&A at the London Film Festival for his upcoming film, Ink, Boyle answered questions about the status of the Cillian Murphy-led 28 Years Later film, and he said that “it’s on the back burner at the moment.”
The financing for 28 Years Later 3 still hasn’t been locked in, and that’s why there’s much uncertainty about the project, but the British filmmaker said that he “hopes” he will be able to make the film.
Boyle also gave other reasons for the delay, one of which is Alex Garland‘s incredibly busy schedule, saying that “Alex has been off doing his own film, which is a huge project”. Garland is adapting the fantasy action role-playing game, Elden Ring, for the big screen.
Why ’28 Years Later 3′ Financing is Facing Issues?

The box office earnings of the franchise’s latest installment could be playing a role in the difficulties the third film is facing in securing financing.
The first 28 Years Later film was considered a success as it made $151.3 million on a budget of $60 million. However, its sequel, which came out this year, couldn’t manage a win, at least at the box office.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Bone Temple was the second installment in a planned trilogy. The film had a reported production budget of $63 million, but its global box office gross was only around $58.5 million.
There is no confirmation on whether the much-anticipated Murphy-led third film will be made. Boyle remains hopeful that he will get the opportunity to complete the story.
